I got an X-rated surprise in Japan

They tend to be a labyrinth with everything from gorgeous linen to painfully cute pencil cases and mysterious snacks. On a pre-pandemic trip to Tokyo, my travel companions and I spent a silly number of hours wandering the department stores of that fair city. We’d buy snacks with no idea what was in the packet. We’d marvel at the fact there were 18,764 different types of Kit Kats to choose from. We would jump out at each other wearing large Hello Kitty hats. It was a gentler time. The store that blew our minds the most was Don Quijote, or “Donki” as it’s known to locals. It’s an absolute riot the moment you walk in the door. While other department stores tried to promote a chic, peaceful shopping environment for their customers, that was not Don Quijote’s M.O. There was blaring music and noise coming from TVs and mechanical toys. Lurid sale signs crammed every square inch. It was like some Tetris-master had seen just how much product they could fit into one department store. We were in sh

‘Very strong provisions’ contained in NACC bill

The Australia Institute’s Deputy Director Ebony Bennett says “there’s no doubt” the proposed National Anti-Corruption Commission “fills a huge gap” in Australia’s federal integrity systems. “And it’s very welcome, and I think the Attorney-General is to be congratulated for bringing it to parliament within the first six months of this term of government,” Ms Bennett told Sky News Australia. “There’s a number of very strong provisions contained in the bill – it’s got a broad jurisdiction, the anti-corruption commission will have the ability to initiate its own investigations, it can accept complaints from whistle-blowers.” She said despite these provisions, an emerging area of contention is the idea public hearings will only be allowed in “exceptional circumstances” and when it's in the public interest. Albo prepares for major clash

Premiers and chief ministers are expected to ask Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to provide a funding boost for public hospitals given rising inflation and the ongoing cost of Covid-19. Currently, there is a 6.5 per cent annual cap on the funding for public hospital services. It limits the Commonwealth increase to about $2bn a year. But the states want a funding package that exceeds that cap until June 30, 2025.Speaking with ABC Radio National on Wednesday, the federal Health Minister suggested the government would not bend to the demands. “There are substantial constraints on hospital activity right now, mainly due to workforce,” Mark Butler said. “The advice I have is not that we‘re going to breach the 6.5 per cent cap, but we’ve also made sure that hospitals are in a good position over the course of the rest of the year to deal with the increase in Covid activity.”Earlier this year, the Prime Minister gave the 50-50 public hospital funding agreement for Covid costs a three-month life

Government ‘just can’t afford’ to continue with fuel excise relief: Chalmers

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the federal government isn’t pretending the end to the fuel excise cut on Wednesday night will be an “easy change” for motorists. “We’ve tried to be upfront with people before the election, during the election and after the election that a budget which is heaving with a trillion dollars in Liberal Party debt can’t afford to sustain something that costs three billion dollars every six months,” Dr Chalmers told Sky News Australia. “So what we’ve said to people all along is the petrol excise relief will come off on Wednesday night as was legislated by our predecessors, that’s just the fact of it. “We know that many people would prefer that to be otherwise but we just can’t afford to continue that relief indefinitely.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

Meghan Markle’s dress had special meaning

In addition to sporting a set of pearl-and-diamond earrings gifted to her by Her Majesty ahead of the pair’s first solo outing in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex looked sophisticated in a black cape dress by Stella McCartney that royal fans might find familiar. That’s because Markle, 41, wore a navy blue version of the look to a concert celebrating the Queen’s 92nd birthday at the Royal Albert Hall back in April 2018.Fittingly, she chose to wear the same style in mournful black to say her final goodbye to the royal matriarch.“Her whole look was about the Queen today. Talk about being thoughtful,” one fan tweeted. The sleek ensemble also adhered to the funeral’s dress code, which called for black knee-length dresses or coats, along with black hats and optional veils; while Markle’s broadbrimmed headwear didn’t include a veil, her sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s did.The Duchess of Sussex — who, like the Princess of Wales, didn’t join her husband in walking in the Queen’s funeral procession, and

Horror photos of Russian torture chambers

Ghastly photos have emerged of Russian “torture chambers” after Ukraine liberated territories in the eastern part of the country.More than 10 “torture rooms” were discovered in various towns in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address on Saturday.“As the occupiers fled, they also dropped the torture devices,” Mr Zelensky said.“Even at the regular Kozacha Lopan railway station, they found a room for torture, found tools for electric torture,” he said. Grim photos show steel cages allegedly used by Russians to house prisoners in a basement. The makeshift prisons were purportedly used by Russian forces to subject people to “inhumane torture”. Ukrainian officials alleged that Soviet-era radio telephones had been used as a power source to shock prisoners. Some of the images are too graphic to publish. “The Russian army tortured people in the cellar of the so-called ‘people’s militia’ in the town of Kozacha Lopan when it was under siege,” the Kharkiv
