Growing calls to address domestic violence in Alice Springs

WARNING: This story contains the names and images of Indigenous people who have died, which have been used with the permission of their family. The family of a woman and baby shot dead by her partner outside Alice Springs in what is being treated as a murder-suicide say they want her death to be the impetus for change. Sky News Australia spoke with Mark Lockyer, the uncle of Alena Kukla, who was killed by her partner in July at a property north of Alice Springs. “I don’t want this to happen to another Indigenous woman and her baby. If something can come out of this that protects women and children, that’s what the government needs to do, that’s what the community needs to do,” said Mr Lockyer. “We need to protect the most vulnerable people in the community.” Indigenous politicians from Labor and the Coalition have also spoken out about the scourge of domestic violence plaguing Indigenous communities in the region.
