Crowds March Through the Streets of Colombo Amid Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka

Protesters frustrated by power cuts and various shortages marched through the streets of Colombo in Sri Lanka, on Thursday, March 31, as a severe economic crisis continued to grip the country. According to local reports “thousands” of people blocked the streets to protest the country’s shortages of medicine, fuel, fertilizer, milk powder, and other items as well as daily power outages lasting for hours. Sri Lanka officials approved 13-hour power cuts for the country on March 31 amid the fuel shortages and low water levels at hydroelectric dams, local media outlet Ada Derana reported. Sellout leggings MAFS star is ‘obsessed’ with

Thanks to multiple Covid lockdowns, my leggings have migrated from gym gear to everyday wear — and given how comfy and versatile they can be, I’m not mad about it. But it also raises the bar as to what makes a pair of leggings worth investing in. They’ve got to be comfortable enough to sit through a day of Zoom meetings at your home desk (or Netflix marathon, no judgment) and also hold up for whatever exercise you’ve got planned.Fortunately, myself and the rest of the news.com.au team have rounded up our favourite leggings for walking, weights and everything in between. ‘Deeply concerning’: Young Australians wouldn’t fight for their country in Ukraine scenario

Young Australians are now so ashamed of themselves and their country that given the choice between fighting for the nation or fleeing they would choose to leave, according to new polling. The Institute of Public Affairs undertook a survey of 1,000 Australians in March and found 40 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds would leave the country if it was in the same position as Ukraine. The institute's Director Daniel Wild believes there are several reasons for what he described as a “deeply concerning and revealing result”. “One is that we’ve simply taken our way of life and our values for granted for many years,” Mr Wild told Sky News Australia. “But the second point is also that young Australians are too often presented with a very negative view of our way of life, a very negative view of Australia’s culture and history.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

Socceroos make call on coach’s future

Australia’s 1-0 loss to the already-qualified Saudi Arabia on Wednesday morning continued the Socceroos’ recent poor run that now stands at just one win from their past seven matches. The defeat ended hopes of Australia qualifying directly for the World Cup, sending the Socceroos to a do-or-die playoff in Qatar in June against the United Arab Emirates, with the winner to take on Peru for a place at the World Cup.Mounting losses, despite a run of injuries and Covid obstacles, has led to calls for Arnold to be moved on, and it’s understood the coach wanted assurances from FA that he would still be in charge of the Socceroos come the playoffs before attending this week’s World Cup draw in Doha.FA chair Chris Nikou gave those assurances on Thursday morning in order to create a “stable environment” for the Socceroos to push for World Cup qualification. “By confirming that Graham will remain head coach of the Socceroos until the completion of our FIFA World Cup campaign, it enables Graham, hi

Aussie writer’s bizarre pre-Oscars prediction

Christos Tsiolkas, the Australian author of 2008 novel The Slap — which followed the story of how a man slapping a child he wasn’t related to sent shockwaves through a community — had mused in a lengthy op-ed for The Saturday Paper that the Oscars had become “boring” compared with Hollywood controversies of the past. His piece, titled ‘An elegy for the once-great Oscars’, published online on Sunday, opened with the line: “Does anyone really care about the Oscars anymore?”Recalling nights watching the ceremony with his family as teenager, he wrote: “It’s been a long time since the ceremony has been screened on prime-time in Australia. The timeslot keeps getting shunted, and large chunks of the awards are truncated to make room for ads. “The assumption is that we are all watching it streamed. On the phone or on the laptop … The sense of occasion is diminished. The very form is outdated.”A mere two days later, Will Smith storming the Dolby Theatre stage and slapping comedian Chris Rock squ

Douglas Murray: The View is the ‘least watchable television program’

Author Douglas Murray says talk show The View is “the least watchable television program in America”. It comes after host Whoopi Goldberg called on the Royals to apologise for slavery after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge embarked on a tour of the Caribbean. “Whoopi Goldberg herself was in trouble just a few weeks ago because on The View she made the original comment that she thought the Holocaust wasn’t about race,” Mr Murray told Sky News host Rita Panahi. “Whoopi Goldberg demands that the Royal Family should apologise for something which no Royal has had any connection to for over 200 years and meanwhile Whoopi Goldberg still hasn’t given a very good apology for something she said only a few days ago.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

Truth behind new ‘super cold’

With immunity at an all time low, thousands emerging from nearly two years of isolation to return to their regular social schedules are being dealt another nasty health blow. The virus, dubbed the “super cold”, has reportedly been spreading like wildfire among Aussies, and striking them down with a ferocity similar to Covid-19. The familiarity of symptoms leaves many to initially suspect a Covid diagnosis, however subsequent testing continually returns negative results.Reported symptoms include “sandpaper throat”, head and body aches, runny nose and fatigue, with the illness sometimes lasting weeks.People with the “super cold” typically won’t lose their taste or smell like they might with a Covid diagnosis, however anyone who suspects the illness is still encouraged to get tested. But while the emergence of the “super cold” has many of us worried, it turns out the illness is not actually a new mega-virus, but instead is the result of a string of viruses hitting our immune systems, which

‘Pandemic puppies’ returned to shelters

After the early days of the pandemic saw a huge increase in the number of pets being adopted, now it seems ‘pandemic puppies’ are being returned in record numbers.Previously, around 50 dogs a month were handed into RSPCA Victoria. That number has increased to 150 dogs per month since Christmas. There has also been a drop in the number of people going to reclaim lost dogs that have been handed in.It isn’t just big dogs which are being surrendered. The animal welfare organisation has noticed a rising trend of small dogs being taken to shelters.RSPCA Victoria animal care manager Nadia Peiris told Nine News that it is something “which almost never happens”.She said the main driver of the rising number of surrendered pets is behavioural problems, and it’s something she said can be traced back to the lengthy lockdowns Victorians endured during the height of the Covid pandemic.“Covid had a huge impact,” Ms Peiris said, adding that while Victoria was worst hit by severe lockdowns, other areas
