Coal and gas price ‘spikes’ are costing Australian families and businesses

New South Wales Energy Minister Matt Kean says coal and gas price “spikes” are feeding through to energy price rises for families and businesses around Australia. “We’re working with the commonwealth to put downward pressure on electricity prices, we’ve done our bit here with the coal cap,” Mr Kean told Sky News Australia. “We’ve put $330 million worth of energy bill relief on the table to support families and businesses at this difficult time – this is not just a national problem, it’s an international problem driven by the illegal war in Ukraine. “We’ve seen huge spikes in the price of coal – in the price of gas and that’s feeding through to domestic energy prices.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

One big problem with Aussie reality TV

Nine’s Married At First Sight, Seven’s Australian Idol and Ten’s Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains all premiered their new seasons in the same 7.30pm timeslot last night. MAFS ran to a comparatively tight 95 minutes, while Idol and Survivor ran for 105 minutes each. And all three are on again tonight, tomorrow and Sunday, with all episodes again running well past the 90-minute mark. If you want to watch every episode of all three shows this week, you’re looking at more than 18 hours of television. I could watch Avatar: The Way of Water twice in that time. We’re one night in and it’s already too much. It doesn’t have to be like this. And in other countries, it’s not: American Idol airs twice a week in the US, primetime viewing on Sunday and Monday nights. The US version of Survivor airs just one one-hour episode per week, for a grand total of 14 episodes her season. That makes it virtually a completely different show to Australian Survivor, which runs to at least 24 episodes a season and giv

Aussie WWE star’s gruesome Rumble injury

The powerhouse entertainer, whose real name is Demi Bennett, outlasted 29 other women to seal her shot at the women’s championship for WrestleMania on Sunday, The Sun reports. Despite coming out as the first entrant, the 26-year-old made history as she eventually eliminated Asuka and then Liv Morgan to win the Rumble.Ripley, who is a member of the Judgment Day faction led by Finn Balor, lasted over 61 minutes in the ring. She now holds the record for the longest female Rumble match performance. However, now the true extent of just how good her exploits on Saturday were have come to light after she let slip an injury she suffered early on in the gruelling bout.Speaking at the Rumble post-show press conference, Ripley said: “I’m obviously very beat up.“My knees are not good in general.“My knee dislocated for a second in the beginning, but it popped back in.“If anything, I can smell blood in my nose.”Ripley then shared a selfie snap of her face on Twitter, which is covered in several cuts a

Shocking state of Medicare revealed

Over 50 per cent of general practices across the country are charging patients out-of-pocket fees, with Aussies paying a minimum of $40 per visit, according to healthcare directory CleanBill. Founder of CleanBill James Gillespie told 9 News bulk-billing is the cornerstone of Australia’s healthcare system. “When we lose bulk-billing among the majority of GPs then we lose universal healthcare,” he said. The Australian Capital Territory is worst off with only five per cent of GPs offering bulk billing services. ACT patients also pay the most for a standard 15 minute doctor’s visit at $49 – in addition to the $39.75 Medicare rebate that’s paid to the clinic. Despite only 27 per cent of clinics in Adelaide offering bulk-billing, the state offers patients the most affordable price of $34 per doctor’s visit. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said earlier this month that primary care had suffered after “nine years of cuts and neglect”. “Primary care is in its worst shape since Medicare began.

Pat Cummins ‘not happy’ about fans calling out ‘daft activism’

Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins has recently “copped plenty of barbs” from fans for his “climate change preaching and taking-the-knee antics,” says Sky News host Rita Panahi. “He is even penning unintentionally funny climate change pieces for the far-left Guardian … but he's not happy about fans calling him out on this sort of daft activism,” she said. Ms Panahi said in a "puff piece" in the Nine papers this weekend he “whines and whines about being called woke”. "He said, ‘I don't even know what woke means. If anything, some people would say it's a good thing. It's a label, it means nothing’. “Ok, so you don't know what woke means but it's a good thing but it also means nothing. Got it. Just like your activism Pat, that's rather incoherent to the point of being nonsensical.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

Woman shocked by her tattoo’s real meaning

A quick Google search would inform eager ink seekers that the turned-over fruit is commonly used as a symbol for swingers looking for a good time.Unlucky Brittany Lewin learned about that signal after she chose a line drawing of a pineapple inside a triangle, NY Post reported.“Is that an upside-down pineapple?” her friend responded to a text message of Lewin excitedly showing off her new addition in a viral TikTok.“Hahaha not when my arm is down,” Lewin responded, naively. Then she did her own Google search. “I’ve made a mistake besties,” Lewin captioned the clip, showing the shocking search results.Viewers on TikTok both laughed and sympathised with Lewin over her oversight.“What was your reasoning behind getting that tattoo then? I’m dying here,” one asked.“It’s meant to represent being a boss babe and the triangle is my lucky symbol,” Lewin responded.“Well, you wouldn’t win either way. Even if you put it the right way up, when you put your arm back down from behind it’d still be upsi

Star’s post sparks paper straw kerfuffle

The basketballer’s plea was met with a groundswell of support from Twitter users after complaining about paper straws “disintegrating”. It comes just months after fierce debate raged surrounding a decision from Australian states for takeaway restaurants and supermarkets to be largely stripped of single-use plastic items. Drmic was clearly taken aback at seeing the impassioned responses his comment received. “I don’t want to get cancelled by the environmentalists but holy s*** can we please have plastic straws back,” he wrote on Twitter. “Or at least something that doesn’t disintegrate after 4 seconds. My brain hurts every time I have to use a paper straw.”He exchanged several messages with Twitter users criticising his comment. “The best part about my last tweet going semi viral is now the basement dwelling gremlins are starting to find it and reply,” The Adelaide 36ers player wrote. Big hint on new Hawks captain

A decision on the captain is set to be fleshed out during an upcoming four-day camp in Morwell and while there won’t be a leadership vote, Mitchell’s coaching philosophy will ensure lengthy discussions between players and coaches. Hawthorn is looking to appoint a fourth captain in seven years after the retirement of Ben McEvoy and Sicily stands out among a playing group which also lost senior players Jack Gunston, Tom Mitchell and Jaegar O’Meara to rival clubs. Mitchell said those senior exits mirrored a time in Mitchell’s own playing career when superstar Shane Crawford retired after the 2008 premiership. Like the Hawks did then, Mitchell is adamant the hole those players left in the club an be filled. “I go back to my early days and I remember when Shane Crawford retired and it was like ‘how is this club going to run without Shane Crawford?’,” Mitchell said on Tuesday.“It was quite amazing that losing someone of such significance as him, but every club they find their equilibrium whe

Los Angeles Sinkhole Grows After Swallowing Two Cars

A sinkhole that formed during storms and swallowed two vehicles on a road in Los Angeles’s Chatsworth neighborhood on Monday, January 9, continued to “exponentially grow in size” over the following days, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said. Footage released by LAFD shows authorities at the scene on Monday night as rain poured down. Further footage, shot during daylight hours, was released by LAFD on Friday, January 13, and depicts the expanded sinkhole and the wreckage of both vehicles after they were removed from the hole. The sinkhole opened up as storms were causing widespread flooding across southern California. Two vehicles fell into the hole, one on top of the other, fire officials said. Two people in the pickup truck were able to escape, but a woman and her teenage daughter were left trapped in the car beneath the truck, according to LAFD. With floodwater pouring in, the sinkhole continued to grow and caused the car to shift and roll, the fire department said. Firefighte

The Lismore floods in February and March last year were listed as the fourth worst natural disaster in the world for 2022. The treasurer believes the biggest influences domestically on the Australian economy for 2023 are likely to be rising interest rates and natural disasters.
