Aussie parents set for huge boost

Speaking on Sky News on Sunday, Minister Clare said while the government had acted to provide further bill relief to families through increased subsidies, it intended to embark on “serious reform” to lock in prices at lower levels.Mr Clare’s intervention follows the release of a new report into child care costs released by the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) which finds child care costs in Australia are less affordable when compared with most other OECD countries. In 2022, an Australian couple earning average wages with two children spent 16 per cent of their net household income on net childcare costs, compared with the 9 per cent OECD average, the report says.Earlier this year, the competition watchdog also found fees had outpaced inflation in the past five years, with increases of between 20 per cent and 32 per cent in the five years to 2022.In response, the Commission makes a number of recommendations to government including additional subsidies to under-serve

Federal government to implement new reforms to put pressure on childcare prices

Education Minister Jason Clare outlines key steps the Albanese government is implementing to bring down childcare fees. Mr Clare’s comments come after a new report found Australian families are spending as much as 16 per cent of their income on childcare. The ACCC report found the country ranked 26 out of 32 OECD countries when it came to childcare affordability. “A number of things need to happen if we’re going to put pressure on prices,” Mr Clare told Sky News Australia. “Step one are the reforms that we implemented in July to make childcare cheaper and that’s pushed the prices down by 14 per cent. “Step two are some of the reforms that are floated in this report and they’ll give us their final report in December. “Step three is the big work that’s being done by the productivity commission right now on what a universal early education system should look like for the next 10 years and beyond.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

The folks from PropTrack trawled through the last 12 months of searches on realestate.com.au and found the top keywords used when looking for property in the Northern Territory. Across the rental and sales markets, ‘swimming pool’, ‘airconditioning’, ‘garage’ and ‘outdoor area’ were some of the most popular words searched. Searches for ‘pet friendly’ and ‘pets allowed’ surged in the past 12 months along with ‘investment’ and ‘view’. Glenn Grantham, real estate guru and general manager of Raine & Horne Darwin, said the top searches would be of no surprise to anyone working in the industry. “Aircon is a no-brainer and you’d be pretty unlucky to find a house in Darwin without it,” he said. “Pools can be fifty-fifty. “You might see an increase in interest if a property has a pool but you can also see a decrease in interest from people who don’t want to look after a pool.”Mr Grantham said solar power had crept up the wish list of many buyers and for some it was even a deal breaker. “I h

Teacher’s ‘pariah’ complaint after student sex

Monique Ooms, 31, shed a few tears in court this week as she learnt she would be spared jail after an appeal against her “merciful” sentence was rejected in Victoria’s Court of Appeal. Ooms had moved to Maffra in Victoria’s Gippsland region at the start of last year to take up a post teaching outdoor education when she met the 16-year-old student. She was in a “fragile mental state” after being dumped when her partner found out she was infertile, and, in May, began to bond with the boy, who was struggling mentally following the death of a friend. What initially started out as messages of support between the pair progressed to Ooms sending pictures of herself in her underwear to the victim.Their contact escalated with messages sent between the pair saying things like “love you” and “I miss you”, before the boy requested they meet up in July. He snuck out of home and was picked up by Ooms, and the pair spoke about the “appropriateness” of what they were doing before eventually kissing. Ov
