Why Spotify is backing Joe Rogan

Well, the answer is likely a lot more simple than you might think: Money. In 2020, Spotify acquired Rogan’s podcast The Joe Rogan Experience in a deal reported to be worth more than $A152 million. The Joe Rogan Experience is now Spotify’s most popular podcast and one of the biggest in the world, with an estimated 11 million listeners per episode.Despite Rogan repeatedly facing criticisms for his views on Covid-19 and vaccines, the controversy hasn’t stopped it raking in profits for the streaming giant.Spotify’s focus on expanding its podcast library has been increasingly evident in the past few years, with the service rapidly acquiring companies “in the emerging podcast marketplace”.In 2019 the company purchased Gimlet Media, home of podcasts such as Reply All, Homecoming and Where Should We Begin? With Esther Perel, for an estimated $230 million ($A325 million). The company also spent almost $200 million ($A283 million) to buy the Ringer, which came along with a number of popular podcas

Anand said she would visit with Canadian forces stationed in Ukraine, deployed under a support mission Operation UNIFIER. On January 26, the Canadian government announced a raft of security assistance that includes an extension and expansion of the operation. On Sunday, Anand visited a memorial for victims of the 1930s famine known as the Holodomor, which claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians, and is widely viewed as a product of Soviet policies. She also paid her respects at a wall of remembrance for victims of the conflict in eastern Ukraine involving Russian-backed forces. Weak Novak Djokovic claims torn to shreds

Cold-hard statistics, so long their best friend in the GOAT debate, were suddenly telling the wrong story after Rafael Nadal edged in front in the most important marker of them all by winning his 21st grand slam title at the Australian Open. But that didn’t stop Djokovic’s rabid fan base from quickly falling back on other weak arguments. Here's the ones you’ll hear the most — and why they don’t stack up.Djokovic would have won this year’s Australian Open and the 2020 US OpenIn the minds of Djokovic’s fans he’s actually won 22 grand slams not 20.They’re convinced he was cantering to the 2020 US Open crown before infamously hitting a tennis ball into a line judge and getting himself disqualified. He would have won this year’s Australian Open too if not for being unceremoniously sent home before the tournament began. They might be right, but if we’re handing out imaginary trophies then Nadal has a claim to just as many — if not more. You know why the Djoker Army were so confident of his cl

The Chiltern SES Unit wrote on social media that they had responded to five flooded houses and warned residents there were still lots of debris on the roads on Sunday morning. “What a night! Apologies for the sirens but driving around town and seeing water half way up peoples cars we knew some properties were going to be impacted,” they posted. “We are still out and about checking roads and properties collecting information to help us prepare for the next storm potentially due later today.”SES Wodonga Unit shared pictures of the damage on their Facebook page, writing they

Medvedev, 25, stunned Djokovic at Flushing Meadows and he’s now focused on crushing Nadal’s Melbourne Park fairytale.“I‘m happy to have the chance to try to stop one more time, somebody from making history,” Medvedev said after his fiery semi-final victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. “I‘m not lying, I know what’s happening. I know what Rafa is going for, I knew what Novak was going for.“But it’s kind of their thing, not mine. Medvedev is going for a slice of his own history given no man has ever backed up their maiden slam with a second on the trot. Andy Murray got close, winning the 2012 US Open before losing the 2013 Australian Open to Djokovic. And it’s fitting he’s doing it against Nadal given when he was child growing up in Moscow hitting balls against a brick wall he used to pret

Perrottet flags latest NSW COVID rescue package could be the last

New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet says a new COVID rescue package to be announced later today could be the last relief payment given to businesses. It comes as the state government is set to announce a $1 billion COVID rescue package aiming to support businesses crippled by restrictions. Traders who have lost more than 40 per cent of their turnover will be able to claim up to 20 per cent of their payroll. What Adelaide’s median house price can get you

Adelaide house prices keep booming but there’s still places to buy under the median price within 10km of the CBD, as well as in the hills and along the coast.Latest realestate.com.au data shows Adelaide’s median house price has reached $565,000, up 9.7 per cent for the December quarter and 15.3 per cent over all of 2021.If you don’t want to stray too far from the centre of town and your budget stretches to that metro median, then inner-northern Devon Park is worth a look. For more affordable suburbs a bit further out, but within the 10km ring, there’s plenty of options in the northwest including Woodville Gardens, Ferryden Park, Athol Park and Angle Park.To the southwest there’s the likes of Ascot Park and Clovelly Park, and Gilles Plains and Hillcrest to the northeast.Coastal options are mostly well south of the city, while your cheapest bets in the hills are Woodside and Lobethal. Mount Barker also remains well under the metro median. While there are still affordable options close to t

Italy’s President Mattarella re-elected, easing crisis

Electing the 80-year-old ended weeks of hand-wringing over whether prized Prime Minister Mario Draghi should be elevated, with many fearing such a move would have left the government rudderless at a highly sensitive time. The former constitutional court judge had repeatedly ruled out serving a second term, but gave in Saturday after Italy's bickering political parties failed to find another viable candidate. He was expected to be sworn in on Wednesday or Thursday. Although many expect him to leave before the end of his new seven-year term, he is likely to stay at least past elections scheduled for 2023.Draghi said the result, after eight rounds of voting over six days, was "wonderful news for Italians".Pope Francis hailed Mattarella's "generous" agreement to stay on during a period of uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Italy hard.Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief brought in to lead a national unity government almost a year ago

Thousands Rally With Truckers in Ottawa to Protest Vaccine Mandates

The so-called “Freedom Convoy” set off from British Columbia on Sunday, January 23, and arrived in Ottawa on Friday ahead of a two-day protest scheduled in the city for Saturday and Sunday. Ottawa Police told downtown residents to “expect delays and major traffic disruptions.” This footage from the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge branch of the People’s Party of Canada, which supports the protest, shows crowds outside parliament. As of January 15, Canada has required truck drivers to be fully vaccinated or face a two-week quarantine period when crossing back into Canada from the US. Australia reveals new move in China spat

The EU claims Beijing is targeting Lithuania, one of the smallest countries in the regional bloc, for allowing Taiwan to open a diplomatic outpost in its capital, Vilnius. “Launching a World Trade Organisation case is not a step we take lightly,” EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said in a statement.“However, after repeated failed attempts to resolve the issue bilaterally, we see no other way forward than to request WTO dispute settlement consultations with China,” he added. In a statement, Trade Minister Dan Tehan said Australia had a substantial interest in the dispute, and would seek to join consultations. “Australia opposes the use of economic coercion and discriminatory and restrictive trade practices which undermine the rules-based international trading system and cause economic harm,” he said on Saturday. “We are committed to upholding and supporting the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. “The WTO dispute settlement system is designed to help members set

Ordinary Australians ‘deserve a pay rise’: Plibersek

Shadow Minister for Women and Education Tanya Plibersek says ordinary Australians “deserve a pay rise” and job security. “There's a range of cost-of-living expenses that have gone up at the same time as wages have been flatlining,” Ms Plibersek told Sky News Australia. “So for eight long years Australians haven’t seen a wage increase and in fact this budget the government is budgeting for those wages to go down.” Ms Plibersek said Labor believes they can ease cost-of-living pressures by doing something to improve wages, bringing down the cost of childcare for 97 per cent of families and bringing down power bills through cheaper renewable energy. Football Australia confirmed fully vaccinated Yallop’s plight in a statement on Thursday morning, saying the 30-year-old West Ham player was “being monitored in isolation” by medical staff. The remainder of the Matildas’ playing squad and staff have returned negative tests. The Matildas, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals, are due to play Thailand in their remaining group match in Mumbai on Friday morning (AEDT).Yallop’s positive result is a reminder that Covid-19 could derail any team at the Asian Cup.Hosts India have already been expelled from the tournament after the virus spread through the camp to the extent that they couldn’t meet the requirement of a 13-player match-day squad.Earlier this week, Matildas star Emily van Egmond said the Australians were “doing everything possible” to remain healthy.“Obviously, it’s a pandemic,” van Egmond said.“It’s turned around the whole entire world, but we have the best protocols in place to keep us safe.” Via news.com.au — Austral

‘Within the rules’: Skippers back controversial BBL move

But while the Sydney Sixers men in the middle for the gripping final ball called it “bizarre” no-one involved thought the back-to-back champions, now headed for s showdown in the final with the Perth Scorchers, broke any rules. Sixers coach Greg Shipperd’s bold call to retire batsman Jordan Silk, who injured his hamstring while fielding, as his team needed two runs off the final ball at the SCG drew the ire of plenty. A batter is permitted to retire at any point for any reason, and doesn’t even have to be hurt to come off the field. But commentators and social media both declared the move, with last-minute inclusion Jay Lenton coming in to run for the final ball, was not in the spirit of the game, including former Test star Mark Waugh. “It’s within the rules, but it’s probably not in the spirit of the game,” he said. Siddle charged to the umpires to express his displeasure at the time but conceded post match it was within the rules. “At the time you run up and you think, you know, he h

Biggest problem in the Big Bash could be solved
