Labor extends terms of military leaders after ‘capability’ concerns

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has raised concerns Labor is “crab walking” away from AUKUS after Defence Minister Richard Marles extended the terms of three senior military leaders. Mr Marles announced on Tuesday that Defence Force chief General Angus Campbell, Vice Admiral David Johnston and chief of joint operations Lieutenant General Greg Bilton will all remain in their posts. He said the decision to extend their terms was to ensure continuity adding the Coalition’s decision to sign the AUKUS agreement with the UK and the US had left Australia with the “potential of a very significant capability gap”. Northern Territory rocket launch went ‘flawlessly’

Equatorial Launch Australia CEO Michael Jones says NASA’s rocket launch in the Northern Territory was a “momentous occasion”. He said the launch went “flawlessly” but Australia’s wind limit requirement caused multiple delays. “It’s mostly in the oscillation of the wind, so each time that happened we just called a halt, we reset the countdown clock at three minutes,” Mr Jones told Sky News Australia. “And the reason for that is that in the last 90 seconds of the countdown there is quite a number of checks and final signoffs to say we’re good to go for launch.” Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au

Charities Donate $12,000 Drone-Jamming Devices to Ukrainian Military

Charities are buying Ukrainian-made drone-jamming devices to donate to the country’s military, according to Radio Free Europe. This footage shows Yaroslav Filimonov, the director of Kvertus Technology – which produces anti-drone systems and other equipment for law enforcement, security services, and military units – demonstrating how to use the drone jammer on an enemy reconnaissance drone. Filimonov says in the video that the tool does not damage the drone, it just forces it to lose connection and coordination, and eventually fall to the ground. This allows Ukrainian forces to confiscate the drone and read its data, he says. “The main objective of our device is to save the lives of soldiers fighting,” Filimonov says in the video. “It’s not a secret that this is a new kind of war where drones are tasked with firing artillery, dropping explosives, and reconnaissance.” Currently, the drone jammer shown in the video, ANTIDRON KVSG-3, is being sold for $12,000. Recorded from the south view of the observatory, this timelapse footage shows the fire and heavy smoke getting closer to the center throughout the day on Thursday. The fire began on June 11 and has been growing and spreading north due to “drought-stressed vegetation” and heavy winds, according to the National Science Foundation’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab), which runs the site. Due to “steep and rugged terrain” it has been difficult for firefighters to manage the fire.
