FEATURE: How Zaaki’s first trainer grew up dodging bombs

Like sheltering from bombs about to strike your house … or running for your life when your school is attacked.Growing up in Lebanon in the 1970s, Moubarak saw it all in the Civil War and other conflicts which rocked his childhood homeland.“It was very scary when they attacked, we used to go to the bottom of our building in the garage and hide there and you can hear all the bombing on top of us,” Moubarak, speaking from Florida, America, where he now trains, told News Corp. “It was all very tragic.“I twice got lost coming out of school when it was attacked, when things start to light up the schools turn the kids loose and everyone starts to run home. “At a young age I got lost a couple of times, once I had to stay for a couple of nights with total strangers.“You never forgot things like this.“We moved to England because of the ongoing Civil War and there was a lot of different types of war.”The road to unearthing Zaaki was a long one for Moubarak who moved to Ireland as a teenager and w...

Floods spark fury over $4.8bn disaster kitty

The unfolding flood event in northern NSW and South East Queensland has reignited criticism from Labor that the Morrison government has largely sat on the emergency response fund (ERF) it announced in April 2019.The ERF allows the government to draw up to $200m a year in additional funding for emergencies and natural disaster recovery and preparedness.Since it was established in 2019 with an initial $3.9bn investment, the ERF has earnt some $836m in interest and paid out $50m in disaster projects, according to the Department of Finance.Emergency Management Minister Bridget McKenzie defended her government’s use of the fund and accused the opposition of playing politics with the flood disaster. She doubled down on her comments on Tuesday morning, saying the ERF was being used as intended.“The emergency response fund was set up as a future fund to be used when all other sources of funding have been exhausted,” she told the ABC.“And I can let you know for this disaster, we haven’t even ins...

‘Let history record’ Joe Biden ‘picked his teeth’ as Putin prepared to invade Ukraine

Let history record that much as Nero fiddled while Rome burned, as Putin prepared for the invasion of Ukraine – Joe Biden "picked his teeth," says Sky News host Rowan Dean. President Joe Biden gave a bizarre response to a reporter's question earlier in the week, who asked if he has "underestimated" Vladimir Putin, by staring blankly and picking at his teeth. "Although there is much humour to be derived from President Joe Biden, the invasion of Ukraine is no joke," Mr Dean said. Via news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site https://www.news.com.au
