First Asian Giant ‘Murder’ Hornet Nest Reportedly Found in the United States

A nest of Asian giant “murder” hornets was found by Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) entomologists in Blaine, Washington on October 22, reportedly the first found in the United States. Estes Park Skies Turn Red as Colorado’s East Troublesome Fire Tops 170,000 Acres

Colorado’s raging East Troublesome Fire prompted mandatory evacuation orders on October 22, as the blaze grew to more than 170,163 acres, or 196 square miles. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park and western parts of Estes Park. Residents were instructed to evacuate as quickly as possible. Town officials said all routes into Estes Park had been closed. Rocky Mountain National Park was also closed, and park officials warned that air quality was “hazardous.” Firefighting authorities expected extreme fire behavior to continue into the evening and burn into upper elevations through the night. Quick-Thinking Rescuers Drag Elderly Couple From Sinking Car in New York Canal

Two police officers and five good samaritans rescued a couple from their vehicle after it became submerged in a canal, in Lindenhurst, New York, on October 19, following a car crash. A 2018 Ford pickup and 2016 Subaru were involved in the crash at Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway at approximately 12.10 p.m, police said in footage of the incident shared on YouTube. Following the crash, the driver of the Subaru backed up his vehicle into eastbound Montauk Highway, where it was struck by a 2004 Mercury. The Mercury then crashed through a fence and into a canal. Rescuers jumped into the water and pulled the driver, Joseph Abitabile, 78, from the vehicle. They were able to break a window and pull Abitabile’s wife, Delores, 76, who was unconscious from the sinking car.
