Proposed levy on the income universities earn may deter prospective students

Universities are divided over a proposed levy on the income they earn from international students. There are fears a levy on almost $10 billion a year in foreign student fees could deter prospective students from studying in Australia. Education Minister Jason Clare says the money could be used to pay for infrastructure, student housing, or research. He has also flagged major changes to university education including free degrees for nurses and teachers and priority places for disadvantaged Australians.
