Voice referendum is ‘for the Australian people’

Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney says the upcoming referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament is not government-owned but is “for the Australian people”. “As the Prime Minister said, it is about making everyone proud, and filling that glaring omission in our birth certificate of and recognising First Peoples,” she said. Ms Burney said the referendum will have two important roles, with the first being the Voice to Parliament and the second about improving Indigenous “life choices and chances”. “Whether it be life expectancy, incarceration, housing, education, by asking First Nations people – which is an act of common decency and good manners,” she said.
