Police suspend search for mysterious missing diver

The man was last seen diving at The Box north of Surfers Point - a popular yet dangerous break because of its shallow, jagged reef - about midday. It’s understood beach witnesses called police having seen the man enter but not leave the water.Beachgoers shared their concerns about the man’s welfare.“We saw the guy head down. He looked like he knew what he was doing, but three hours seemed like a long time to be out there so we’re all a bit worried for him,” one said.“Better to be safe than sorry, I always say.”Surf Life Saving raised the alarm about 1pm, sparking a huge search operation in the area that included the deployment of police air wing and a marine crew.On Saturday, however, police suspended the search as they said no missing persons had been reported, and they had failed to find any belongings or car abandoned at the beach. The man, who was described as being in his 30s with long, dark hair, was wearing a full black wetsuit and camouflage diving fins.Anyone with information is asked to please contact police immediately on 131 444.
