Racing world stunned by horse’s savage acts

The six-year-old horse was seen on video replays lashing out against Yaupon in the $600,000 Group 1 Forego Stakes as they made their final run to the line.Jokes about the incident have been flying around the internet ever since the Saturday incident, making Firenze Fire the most talked about horse in the world right now.Racing at Saratoga Race Course in the United States, Firenze Fire left TV commentators staggered as they watched a replay with the live callers using terms such as “savage”, “holy cow” and “scary”.The live race caught a glimpse of the incident. But it was the front on replay that showed just how brutal Firenze Fire was.Firenze Fire lashed out at the moment it became clear Yaupon had too much speed in the final few hundred metres having raced up alongside the favourite around the turn.Yaupon jockey Ricardo Santana said after the race it was something he had never seen before as his ride showed pressure under fire to win the race by a head.“That was kind of scary,” Santana said of the incident. “That never happened to me before and the only thing I can think is ‘Don’t stop riding.’” Firenze Fire’s jockey Jose Ortiz could clearly be seen reaching out to grab his mount’s right rein to get him off his rival, but the horse could not be stopped until it lost momentum as a result of the Mike Tyson-like move.“I had perfect position; I stayed next to him and I thought I had him beat, but you saw what happened inside the sixteenth — my horse tried to bite the other horse and I really had to get a hold of him to get him away from him,” he said. The trainer of Firenze Fire Kelly Breen was actually proud of her horse’s hustle.“He went after him two times in four full strides,” he said. “He’s a tough cookie. I have never seen him do anything like that before.”The incredible footnote to the story is that Firenze Fire was a victim of a similar biting incident three years ago.
