The government has allocated $500 million per year to assist universities in offering tailored programs to support Indigenous, regional and low socioeconomic students. Education Minister Dan Tehan announced on Friday the plan was designed to increase the level of participation among Indigenous Australians as they have currently have the lowest rates of higher education participation and attainment in the country. He also revealed a plan to increase Indigenous attendance rates by “providing a guaranteed bachelor-levelled Commonwealth supported place at any public university”. “If our changes and our reforms can make it easier for those young Indigenous students – then we will have done a great thing for this nation,” he said.
